Injuries always occur during the child's studies, and the level of protection of the environment of your home should correspond to the age and the achieved level of psychomotor development of the child.
From the point of view of preventing injuries to young children, there are important moments when their motor abilities change and a caring parent should get used to protecting a new, wider range of their offspring.
Of course, the following list is not a complete overview of motor development, but it shows the main stages of motor skills that affect the safety of a child. It is also obvious that each child has a different rate of development, and in healthy children, tolerance plus or minus one month is completely normal, and differences are even more common in the first year. So take the following table as a rough outline of what you can expect and what you need to prepare for.
1-4 months: in newborns, the safety of the child is ensured by safe handling. In the first month, the child does not keep his head in an upright position, in the next - for a very short time. He reacts to strong sounds with jerks with his whole body. If you pick up something hot or sharp, do not hold the child with the other hand at the same time. Never put a baby basket on a raised surface (table, sofa). So you will protect your baby.
5-6 months: the child begins to sit, turns over from the back to the stomach. He passes objects from hand to hand and puts everything in his mouth. (This habit will not leave him in the coming months, he will only be able to get where he wants and take what he wants.) So he can easily change his position and explore the world
7 months: the baby can actively turn. He also begins to crawl slowly, first backwards, then alternately moving his limbs forward. He tries to sit, he can grab objects by himself, so far only with his whole hand.
8-9 months: the baby begins to sit on his own, by the end of the period he is already sitting steadily. The hands no longer perform only an auxiliary function. The grip of objects moves from the palm to the fingertips. Some children at this age even begin to get up. The possibilities of the baby are much wider, he actively explores the space, pulls objects out of boxes.
10-11 months: the child begins to walk around the room, holding only one hand. Some children take the first independent uncertain steps. It can climb stairs or surfaces about 20 cm high. Of course, the child will be better at overcoming obstacles, but keep in mind that the fact that he can climb does not mean that he will be able to go down immediately. He grabs even small objects with his index finger and thumb.
12th month: deftly climbs stairs and furniture. The child begins to build himself in a space without support. He definitely uses his hands to grab objects, not as a prop. Between the 12th and 15th month, children take their first steps. Durable shoes are recommended only when the child is mostly standing and walking. In the meantime, use anti-slip socks.
In the coming months, more demanding motor skills will develop at a rapid pace, approximately in the following order:
16 - 18 months: squats, lifting objects, climbing on a chair, running
19 - 21 months: climbing stairs, holding hands, coordinated running
22-24 months: independent walk on the stairs, climbing on a high chair
25-36 months: tricycle riding, jumping on one leg, jumping over obstacles.
Can a small child behave safely?
Although at the age of 13 to 15 months, the child already understands the prohibition "not allowed" - you can choose another word meaning a general warning.
